Collaborative Research Centre: The Milky Way

The Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 881 “The Milky Way” is a research programme funded by the German Research Association and based at the Centre for Astronomy (ZAH) at the University of Heidelberg.

The focus of the SFB is our home galaxy the Milky Way. It provides an example of a typical spiral galaxy, an opportunity to explore galaxy evolution right on our doorstep and a test case for modelling the formation and evolution of spiral galaxies.

In addition to ZAH, the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies are also involved in the SFB 881, while the Haus der Astronomie functions as a partner for the centre’s outreach activities.
