IAU Office of Astronomy for Education
Haus der Astronomie hosts the Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The International Astronomical Union’s Strategic Plan 2020–2030 provides for the establishment of an Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE), which will support the astronomy community and astronomy educators in bringing the fascination of astronomy into schools. Its activities will include establishing a worldwide network of National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs), promoting astronomy in national curricula, supporting teachers with evidence-based education research and helping the community with its professional development. The OAE is also intended to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing within the community, particularly between astronomy education researchers and astronomy education practitioners.
The selection of HdA to host the OAE was announced on 28 November 2019 by the IAU (see also our news item). As we get the OAE up and running, further information will appear on this page, and eventually on a dedicated OAE page.
- We invite interested persons to apply for our open positions! We are currently advertising:
- At the 1st Shaw Prize-IAU Workshop "Astronomy for Education" in Paris, we had an intensive discussion about our plans for the OAE, networking and collaboration with parts of the community. You can find our slides for this workshop, setting out our plans for the OAE, below
- We will soon issue calls for applications for institutions to host the next Shaw-IAU Workshop and to join forces with us as OAE centers and nodes. Additionally, the National Committees for Astronomy of the IAU will be invited to nominate their NAECs and a procedure for the appointment of NAECs in countries without a National Committee will be established
