Astronomy Day on 30 March 2019: May the night be with us

    March 07, 2019

Under the motto "Lights off, stars on!", astronomical institutions all over Germany will draw attention to the topic of light pollution on 30 March 2019 - HdA will participate with a lecture evening with planetarium demonstrations and observations of the night sky.

The German Astronomy Day, founded by the German amateur association "Vereinigung der Sternfreunde" (VdS), will be held on Saturday, 30 March 2019 and will provide an opportunity to learn about astronomy at observatories, planetariums, research institutes and dedicated amateur astronomers throughout Germany and to explore the world of stars with one's own eyes. This year's Astronomy Day has the motto "May the night be with us - lights off, stars on!" and is intended to draw attention to the problems of light pollution.

The Haus der Astronomie celebrates Astronomy Day 2019 with a lecture evening with a planetarium demonstration and subsequent observations of the sky (weather permitting). Admission starts at 5 p.m. The lecture "How to build the world's largest telescopes" (in German) by Dr. Tom Herbst from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, which is dedicated to today's large professional telescopes, will begin at 6 p.m. and will boil down to the question of why astronomers no longer build them in Germany. Afterwards (approx. 7.30), Dr. Carolin Liefke and Dr. Markus Pössel from the Haus der Astronomie will showcase the planetarium night sky under the motto "Like sparkling diamonds on black velvet" and demonstrate the influence of light pollution on the view of the night sky above Heidelberg. If the sky is clear, observations with telescopes will also take place.

The admission fee, including the system fees incurred during advance booking, is 5 Euros.
