Gravitational Lensing – German-Italian WE Heraeus Summer School "Astronomy from Four Perspectives" in Jena

Wo: Universität Jena

Wann: 1. bis 8. September 2019

The year 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the detection of the bending of light by the gravitational field of the Sun as it was predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. By now this effect, known as "gravitational lensing", has become a powerful tool in astrophysics and cosmology.

The aim of the conference is to give an as-broad-as-possible overview over the deflection of light by gravitational fields in its various aspects: physics, astronomy, history, teaching. The lectures, tutorials and student talks cover, in theory and observation, topics like the deflection of light in the solar system and in neutron-star binaries, gravitational lensing in the narrower sense (strong, weak, micro) and the bending of light by strong gravitational fields like those of neutron stars and black holes.
