ESO Science Outreach Network (ESON)

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is the leading European organization for astronomical research. It operates several observatories in Chile, including La Silla Observatory and Paranal Observatory, which is home to the Very Large Telescope. Together with international partners, ESO also runs the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

The ESO Science Outreach Network (ESON) is an international network of scientists and science communicators from all ESO member states and selected other countries. The ESON members serve as an interface between scientists and the media, and in particular as points of contact for the media regarding ESO outreach programmes. Their tasks include communications for the European Southern Observatory in the respective local language of each member state and publicising ESO activities.

The Haus der Astronomie is the German representative of the ESO Science Outreach Network. Supported by volunteers, we manage the ESO German-language website, create German-language information for ESO, and are involved in writing press releases and translating them into German. Moreover, we are available to respond to any questions the media or general public may have on the work of the European Southern Observatory.
